About Our Estrogens, Total

Overview

Estrogens are a class of steroids that regulate the development and function of reproductive organs as well as the development of secondary sex characteristics in women. They, along with another hormone, progesterone, aid in the regulation of the menstrual cycle, the growth of the breasts and the uterus, and the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy. Though they are primarily associated with women, they are also present in men and play a role in bone metabolism and growth in both sexes. Estrogen tests evaluate one of three components in the blood or urine: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), or estriol (E3). The amount and type of estrogen present in the blood of the average woman will fluctuate throughout her life. Levels change on a daily basis, during menstruation, and in pregnancy. The estrogen test can determine an imbalance in the estrogen levels of a woman and help to understand the possible presence of multiple disorders, such as the early onset of puberty, ovarian functioning, menstrual abnormalities, infertility, and abnormal vaginal bleeding. It can also be used to understand the best time for a woman to conceive. In Men and boys, this test can help understand delayed puberty , signs of feminization, such as enlarged breasts, or potentially a hormone producing tumor.
